About the Program

Welcome to the BS program in Chemical Sciences at IIT Mandi, a unique and research-intensive program introduced in August 2023. Designed for students with a passion for scientific discovery, the program combines a strong foundation in chemistry with the flexibility to specialize in Organic, Inorganic, Physical, or Materials Chemistry while pursuing minors in engineering, management, or humanities. Its project-oriented curriculum provides early exposure to cutting-edge research, culminating in a dedicated research-focused (optional) MS year after the successful completion of the 4-year BS. Graduates are well prepared for careers in industry, technology, PSUs, and entrepreneurship, as well as higher studies and research at leading institutions worldwide.

Prof. Aditi Halder (Coordinator)

Dr. Indu Bala (Co-Coordinator)

Uniqueness of the Program

The BS-MS program offers options for specialization in chemistry branches as well as minors in engineering and humanities branches and is highly research-oriented, which makes the program one of its kind. Particularly, it offers:

  • Option for specialization in major chemistry branches, organic, inorganic, physical, and material chemistry through discipline elective courses in the 3rd and 4th year of BS.
  • Option for minors in different branches including Computer Science Engineering, Communication Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Measurement and Instrumentation, Management, German Language, etc.

Due to the project-oriented nature of the program, the graduates get good exposure to projects in the desired area as early as in their 4th year of the BS program. In addition, the 5th year of MS is primarily research-focused with specialized theory courses.

Career Prospects

The BS-MS Chemical Sciences program graduates will have placement opportunities in various technology companies, chemical & pharmaceutical industries, and PSUs. In addition, after completing the MS, they will have the opportunity to pursue an academic and research career in a specialized field.

Admission Procedure

The admission is through Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Advanced) after the 10+2 level.

BS-MS Credit Structure Overview

Figure: Summary framework of core and elective credit distribution

Minor, Specialization, and MS Requirements

Specialization

For specialization in a specific chemistry branch (Organic, Inorganic, Physical, Material), students need to complete at least 12 credits from a specific Discipline Elective basket (to be specified).

Minor

A specialist basket of at least 3 courses is required for each Minor. In order to successfully complete a Minor, a student needs to take at least 9 credits (Free Electives) with a CGPA of 7.0 out of the courses defined in that Minor basket.

MS

Students may opt for the MS program if she/he has a CGPA of 6.5 or more and no ‘F’ grade till the fourth or fifth semester.

Double Major

Option for Double Major, as per IIT Mandi academic norms, is being implemented in the BS-CS program.
